Week 1
(May 23rd - May 27th)
This week, I met with my mentors, Dr. Yu-Han Chang and Dr. Rajiv Maheswaran from the Computer Science department at the University of Southern California (USC) and from the Computational Behavior Group (CBG) at the Information Science Institute of USC. I was also introduced to the mission and goals of the group as well as to some of the various other graduate research students who are members of the CBG.
My project was described to me by my mentors and the goals and expected outcomes of the project were clearly defined. The project will involve the usage of previously collected data from basketball games to derive patterns that will be used in machine learning to predict the successions of events in future basketball games, either based on the team(s) or the player in a team.
My first assignment towards this task was to organize all the data collected for the events of actions during each game of each season in a basketball tournament. Four season were taken into consideration and there was about 100 games in each season. For each game, about 450 events were captures. This raw data was used to set up a database with useful information and loaded onto a sql server.
