Week 1

May 29 - June 4

This was my first week working at UNC Charlotte and it has been a learning experience. Although Monday was a holiday, Tar and I met Dr. Richter for lunch to learn about the project we will be working on this summer. During this time, she also gave us some reading to get started on that will help us on the project. Tuesday and Wednesday we attended orientation with the REU students. We got aquainted with the labs and the different projects going on with the computer science department on the campus. Appart from this, our time has been spent in the lab. Since I have no experience in game design, most of this week has been devoted to learning how to use software such as GameStudio and GameMaker. I've worked on various tutorials with these programs to prepare me for the project. We've also had the task of brainstorming ideas for the game we are trying to make. The group I am working with has several ideas for quests to learn different things in programming.

Coming from a small school, this environment has been very different for me. It is neat to be able to see what research and computer science is like at a university. Here, computer science is broken up into many different areas. People know so much about what they are working on. I'm glad I have the opportunity to see this new perspective of my major.
