Week 3

I have had another week of reading. I had a meeting with Yong on Monday, and we discussed some more specific possibilities for my project. In order to let me have a true "graduate student experience" he doesn't really want to give me a project, but would rather I pick and choose and come up with something on my own. The possibilities are (1) To create a model for the power consumption in existing routing protocols, DSR and AODV, based on different variables and (2) to work more closely with Zebranet and identify parts of the algorithm that use too much power and optimize them. Yong suggested I focus on (1), because he would find it more useful. He said that having a model that has been verified will save him the trouble of having to run a full simulation whenever he makes changes. With this plan in mind, I have been reading about the DSR algorithm more detailedly. In the meantime, I am spending a lot of time with the NS-2 tutorial. I will have to run simulations to verify whatever model I come up with, so I have to learn to use NS-2. Some of the code to use NS-2 is in Tcl. Since I am not familiar with Tcl at all, I have a lot of reading to do. I had another meeting with Yong on Thursday, and he helped me set up the computer I am using in the lab.
