Week Nine
July 25th - July 31st, 2011

Casa Bonita actually exists! Our close friend and hardcore South Park fan (he was a groomsman at our wedding) suggested we go here. He swore that it exists. Being the scientist and skeptic that I am, I had to see it to believe it myself. The restaurant had a fun and wonderful atmosphere. We had lots of fun :). I can't believe it's almost the end of the summer experience...

We spent the beginning of this week working on obtaining credentials to the BGPmon website and then learning how to update it. It turns out last week's approach was way off. We just needed to find out who was last in charge of the site and ask him for access. The brute force method of trying to figure out the website was just a waste of time. Next, we worked on manually parsing 5 MRT messages that BGPmon tagged as "corrupt". We wanted to narrow down the source of the alleged corruptions. While in the process of working on this, we realized that BGPmon might not be discarding the MRT message.

We also received an email through the BGPmon mailing list that listed a potential bug dealing with MRT subtypes not corresponding to protocol documentation. Once we made the changes, BGPmon had problems. So, overall, this week was mainly about uncovering bugs and fixing bugs and then finally trying to release BGPmon. The release is scheduled for Monday August 1st. It's been a long testing phase for this version, but given that there are numerous large Internet entities wanting to deploy BGPmon, it's important to make sure the product released to them can run in a reliable and stable state. Looking back, it's amazing that this version started out just being about adding loop detection for chaining and upgrading the XML output format. Along the way, many hidden bugs and memory leaks were discovered. That's about all that happened at work. Main point: BGPmon version 7.2 is very close to being finished and released.

During the weekend, we spend a day in Denver. I'll admit I'm a huge fan of South Park, so we went to Casa Bonita (season 7, episode 11). It was fun to see the real version of this place, including cliff divers, a mariachi, and a lot of other neat attractions (all in the restaurant). South Park actually wasn't far from the truth this time. We also visited the new Ikea that opened up on Wednesday. It was fun to see and test out potential furniture for the new apartment back home. I'm sad that next week is my last week here in Colorado, but I'm also excited and look forward to having our own place (finally).
