Week One
When I left Minnesota it was 47 degrees outside, very comfortable for a May morning. Upon arriving in Texas it Was in the lower 90's. I am sure glad I brought shorts and sandals to Texas. After checking into my hotel room it was time to make my way to SMU. I found the campus fairly easily using the public transit system. When I arrived on campus I was greeted by Beth Minton the secretary in the CSE department, she introduced me to Xi Shen an International student from China whom I will be working with. My first assignment was to read two textbooks on digital design to give me some background.
Week Two
After finishing the two books on digital design, it was time to start working with design and simulation tools. I am still getting comfortable with some of the tools I will be using to assist in research. I am also begininng to learn how to program using the HDL Verilog. It is still very hot outside, I am very happy that Caruth Hall has air conditioning!
Week Three
I am beginning to use the simulation tools. I am completing some labs from a class offered at SMU to get some practice using Quartus. I am also running simulations and gathering some data for the research.
Week Four
This week we started working with a tool called Primetime. The program is new to us so we had to do some reading to see if we were using the tool correctly. It has been over 100 degrees everyday this week! We also had a hail storm that caused plenty of property damage!
Week Five
I gathered some data using a tool called Xilinx version 14.1, the school has an older version so I had to download a free thirty day trial to use the tool. The updated version is more user friendly and has more features than the older version.
Week Six
Work on the project is going well. I am learning about Chinese culture from my new friend Xi. I am also teaching my friend about American culture, as he is very eager to find his place in American society. I am learning so much from Xi, and he is also learning from me.
Week Seven
I have been helping Xi with some reading. He is more comfortable reading scientific journals in Chinese. We are trying to learn how to use Synopsys, a synthesis tool for advanced ASIC chips. I have also continued gather data using Xilinx.
Week Eight
Last week ended with the sad news of the movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victim's families.
Week Nine
I am getting excited to go back home to Minnesota where the weather is nice and cool. I am also going to miss my new friends I made in Texas. I hope I can come back someday to visit them. Maybe, I will study at SMU for my graduate studies.
Week Ten
This week Prof. Dworak treated Xi, Abhijeet, and I to lunch at the Cheesecake Factory. Also, Xi brought me to an authentic Chinese restaurant. The food at the Chinese restaurant was so delicious. I wish we had a restaurant like that back in Minnesota.
I wish I could have more time to help finish the research project. I have gained a lot of experience while on my research experience here in Texas. When I first arrived in Texas I had no idea what the research was about. I am excited to get back home to continue my studies. I will definitely have an advantage over my peers when I take a digital design class.
