JOURNAL
WEEK 1
- We were introduced to SmartThings and how smart devices can improve quality of life
- Our first task was to find a way to create new actions for our smart device hubs
- We had to find out how to make a light flicker when a presence is detected (motion sensor detects movement)
- I came across Groovy and webCORE
- Groovy was more customizable but less intuitive
- I used webCORE and created a "Piston" to link the motion sensor to the light and to make it flicker
- Looked into using Alexa and linking it with SmartThings
- Looked into creating a website
- Looked into creating an email server

WEEK 2
- Finished week 1 journal
- Created an Alexa skill
- Visited the senior center where we will be working
- Visited the main Center.
- Started working on connecting HUE Hub to SmartThings
- Started working on designs for email client

WEEK 3
- Finished week 2 journal
- Finished HUE Hub connection
- Wrote code to link HUE Hub to motion sensor
- Started working on the front end coding for email client
- Thinking of a name for the server
- Old people mail
- Silver Fox
- EZMail
- Set up WiFi at the Senior center to work with our Chrome Books
- Set up Echo Spot to work with our SmartThings Hub and HUE Hub
- Had first class with the elderly people
- Taught them how to turn laptops on and off
- Taught them how to use the mouse (left and right click, and scrolling)
- Found this thing called LANnouncer that should support Alexa notifications
- Started looking into setting up LANnouncer

WEEK 4
- Finished week 3 journal
- LANnouncer not working
- Looking into creating an Alexa Skill that takes the activation cue from the motion sensor
- Had another session with the seniors
- Taught them how to use the key combinations on most windows machines
- This was particularly satisfying because of their excitement as they learned
- They did not even want to use the mouse again after learning the key combinations

WEEK 5
- Finished week 4 journal
- LEARNED HOW TO MAKE SPAGHETTI!
- I am so happy! Now I do not have to eat Chick Fil A every day!
- I'm making spaghetti every day :)
- Looking more into alexa skills to make her speak notifications from the smartthings hub
- Went to the senior center again
- Taught them how to use browsers and how to navigate the internet.
- I think this was probably our most successful session yet.
- Initially we only had 7 participants but as the lesson went on more people joined.
by the end we had a full session.
- It's not possible to have Alexa speak the notifications. Looking for other ways.
- Started learning another programming language (Node-Red)
- Hopefully going to be able to connect it to the smartthings hub
- I have been eating spaghetti all week.

WEEK 6
- Finished week 5 journal
- I am sick of spaghetti.
- Figured out how to connect Node-Red to smartthings
- Connected Node-Red to a Raspberry Pi
- Connected the smartthings hub to the Raspberry Pi Via a private URL
- Finally got the notifications to be spoken through the Raspberry Pi
- Working on making the code more readable and intuitive
- Visited the seniors again
- Taught them how to use email
- Okay I know I said this before but this was the best session
- It was a little rough at first but once we got through the nitty gritty of gmail having tiny print we were able to teach them how to send emails and how to check their emails.
- The reaction was amazing
- I am so sick of spaghetti.
- learning how to cook rice

WEEK 7
- Finished week 6 journal
- Made rice for the first time
- It was disgusting. I think I made it with too much water
- I soldered some things!
- That was so cool. I did not think I would ever learn how to solder but here we are
- I would definitely do it again.
- Watched fireworks under the bridge with the rest of the DREU students
- They were so beautiful
- Looking for a way to program the arduino on the board I soldered to move the stepper motor
- Finally figured out the arduino and got the motor to move consistently

WEEK 8
- Finished week 7 journal
- Getting pretty good at making rice
- Now that the Arduino and Stepper motor are working together I need to find out how to
get this Arduino to communicate with another Arduino wirelessly.
- Looked into the RFM69 Library
- Reading all the documentation for it because it looks like it will work
- Very optimistic about it.
- I keep getting errors with the library because it is outdated

WEEK 9
- Finished week 8 journal
- Celebrated my 19 birthday!
- July 16 2018
- The other DREU students took care of me
- They cooked and we played cards and dominos
- Starting to get kind of sad because it's almost over and I've made new friends
- RFM69 Library still not working so I'm looking for other libraries that do the same thing.
- Found RadioHead Library and it seems more reliable than RFM69
- When I upload the library and try to run it I keep getting errors
- Asked Dr. Anderson for help but she couldn't help too much because she was
running one of her summer camps and could not come into the lab.
- Worked on troubleshooting the Arduinos but my Arduino knowledge is very limited

- Finished week 9 journal
- LAST WEEK!
- Kind of excited to go home but at the same time I want to stay here
- Have not started packing yet
