Research Project:

The research that I will be helping to conduct during my stay at Clemson University involves 5th and 6th grade girls program a dance sequence, effectively integrating movement and coding. The hypothesis that this research will test is that girls creating interactive movement for their virtual characters and using their bodies to think through the actuation of the characters should bootstrap their intuitive knowledge in order to learn computational concepts, utilize computational practices, and develop computational perspectives.

My job in particular will be to replace the static blog that is currently the website (www.venvi.org) with a more interactive model to better convey the interactive nature of the actual research and creative computing. In order to do this, I will need to acquire and utilize a number of web development skills, both in terms of design and coding.

Goals:

  1. Research Goals:
    • Increase computational thinking in 5th and 6th grade girls.
    • Eventually increase the number of women in computer science fields in the future.

  2. Personal Goals:
    • Acquire a number of web development skills over the course of the research.
    • Gain a greater understanding of the fundamental aspects of computer programming.
    • Experience the process of conducting research and documenting findings.
    • Contribute to a beneficial cause.
