Melissa Clarkson is currently pursuing a PhD in Biomedical and
Health Informatics at the University of Washington (UW) School of
Medicine in Seattle. She is advised by
Dr. James Brinkley
of the UW
Structural Informatics Group.
As her dissertation title "Developing design patterns for the
visualization of biomedical knowledge networks" suggests,
Melissa's passion resides in designing methods of communicating
complex scientific knowledge, primarily via web applications.
As part of her dissertation work, she is designing browsers for the
Foundational Model of Anatomy (FMA),
an ontology of human anatomy, and the
Ontology of Craniofacial Development and Malformation (OCDM).
Furthermore, Melissa has a B.S. degree from Kansas State
University in microbiology and biochemistry, a M.S. degree
from Carnegie Mellon in Communication Planning and Information
Design, and a certificate from UW in Natural Science Illustration.
