Final Paper

My name is Kami Vaniea (vaniea@engr.orst.edu). I'm from Starkey, Oregon outside of La Grande, Oregon. I'm currently a student at Oregon State University. In Corvallis, Oregon. I am currently a Junior in Computer Science.

What I do at Oregon State:
Research: Before applying to the Distributed Mentor Project I worked with Professor Herlocker and Northwest Alliance for Computational Science and Engineering at Oregon State University as a Undergraduate Research Assistant. I did research with recommendation systems and collaborative filtering. The two big projects I worked with, were the Tsunami Digital Library and a collaborative filtering interface for the Oregon State University Library. Neither project has been made public yet, but the library interface should be released sometime this summer and I plan on posting it here. For an example of collaborative filtering see Professor Herlocker's previous project MovieLens or the ever famous LaunchCast at Yahoo.

ACM: I am an active ACM member. I have competed in regional contests sponsored by ACM such as the ACM/IBM ICPC programing contest as well as local programming contests such as the Oregon Software Engineering Contest. I do tutoring through ACM and I teach the occasional workshop for the general student body. I was recently elected ACM President for the upcoming school year. I look forward to bringing back my experiences as part of DMP to Oregon State and sharing them with my fellow students.
