Divas with Keyboards: Girls Get Connected to Computing

During the 2002-2003 school year, Dr. Deborah Knox, Emily Gibson, and I began an outreach program for high school girls who were interested in computers to encourage them to enter the field of Computer Science. We recruited several other female Computer Science majors and together we developed a day-long program which included tutorials, a history of women in computing, and a mentoring session. Additionally, Dr. Knox arranged for each girl to receive several free books on Computer Science and programming.

Friday Afternoon Computing Technology Seminar

Upsilon Pi Epsilon began a program during the 2002-2003 year to encourage socialization among the Computer Science majors at The College of New Jersey, who as a group tend to be fairly solitary. This program, FACTS, offered technical presentations on current research in the department as well as tutorials from student experts. I helped organize FACTS as well as gave multiple presentations, including one on the WHAT project in the Fall.
