Description of Summer Project

Quick overview

The project I chose was to make a program that would keep track of changes to a webpage being made with VRV-ET (more on that in a bit) and then show the user the changes to the webpage since the last date they visited the webpage. Sounds simple.

Rough Plan

First I am going to look at some other programs that may do what I want and then see if they can be modified or if I need to start from scratch.

Then, I will work on a sample report, get some input from the geologists and hopefully, this will lead to more samples and a final program that will do what they want.

Description of VRV-ET (summary)

VRV-ET stand for virtual research vessel - educational tools. In essence, VRV-ET grew from VRV (virtual research vessel). VRV is a research project that hopefully will allow scientists to pool data for scientific purposes so that many scientists can access data that,. currently, only a few possess. The information currently being used to develop VRV is geological data on the trenches and mountains on the ocean floor. The scientists who travelled on the RVs (research vessels) collected data about the ocean floor. They have the information but no easy way to share the data with other scientists. VRV is planned to provide a large database which would allow for sharing information through a network and thus allowing more scientists access to information useful in all areas.

VRV-ET grew from the VRV program in that some scientists wished to make a webpage about the data they had. However, a lot of the scientists wanted to work on it, yet they did not wish to learn HTML or all the many tools required to make a nice webpage. Thus the educational tools are a way that they can make webpages together being apart without any knowledge of HTML. The scientists can enter media and text however they please and then make a webpage using the tools. (For more information go to the webpage.)
