Week 4: June 17th- June 21st
The week started out pretty quiet. I continued to work on the cubic function for the quadrotor research.
Most of the week was a blur, consisting of meetings and office moves. For the last 3 weeks I have been sharing a small office with Erica and Kaz. It was crowded but nice to have our own space. Now after the office shuffle Erica and I are in the conference table in the common space. Its not bad its just funny because we smack-dab in the center of all the traffic in the office space. We monitor all the comings and goings of the people in the adaptive motion planning (AMP) offices. On Tuesday a group of high school students doing computer science stuff in one of the other UNM offices came by for a demonstration of what we have been doing in AMP. We brought out all the robots and got to play with them for an hour. This was really fun for me because it was the first time I had gotten to see the robots in action. I have been working on the theoretical and computation aspect of research and it was exciting to get to mess around with the robots even if it was just for a short time. Besides all that I have been working with the graphs and equations in Matlab. Sandra came back on Wednesday so I showed her everything I had been tinkering with. She helped me refine some of my code. She seemed pleased by the data I have been accumulating so maybe after I make some adjustments to the code we can start looking at the data and trying to come up with a formula that will judge the error.
It is hard to tell if the weeks are going by slow while the days go by fast or if it's the other way around. I am enjoying my time here and really like all the people in the office, but at the same time I am not used to sitting in front of a computer all day. Nor am I used to being so inexperienced. Erica is my fellow undergraduate and even she knows more than I do. I am by no means complaining, it's just something I have been thinking about lately. Looking at the websites posted by other DREU students I have not found any accounts of feeling overwhelmed or worried like my own. Maybe other students are not concerned with their challanges. I am just really happy that I have this opportunity to get some experience in CS and learn. I hope that I can achieve something worth note this summer and not let Lydia, Sandra, or the rest of the team down.
Leisure Time This week I spent a lot of time working out and going to see my grandma. I had a friend from school, who is working in New Mexico this summer, come stay with me on Thursday becuase he had a doctors appointment in town. We went to a couple bars and watched the Heat win the NBA finals. I went home over the weekend to do lots of laundry and catch up on some tv and reading.
