Outside UW
Before coming to Seattle, I thought that it would be really rainy and gray.
Despite these rumors (though it is like this for most of the year), Seattle
is actually extremely beautiful in the summer! I am
enjoying the warm and sunny weather!
Moving into my apartment went well, after all I could only had two suitcases
to unpack. It is only a 15-minute walk from my apartment to the University of Washington,
so I am extremely excited about that. Also, I am only about a five-minute
walk from University Village, a mall with some nice shops, restaurants, and a
grocery store. Honestly, I do not think that I could have found a better
location. In addition, my roommate is really kind, and tries to help me out
as much as she can so that my transition will be as easy and smooth as
possible.
At first, finding my way around both the University of Washington and Seattle
in general was pretty difficult. The University of Washington is a huge, yet
beautiful campus, but at times it seemed as if I was trying to find my way
around a maze. Each day however, Jocelyn (another DMP student) and I would
venture out in a new part of the campus. Now, I can find my way around pretty
easily.
Seattle, on the other hand, takes a bit more time to get comfortable with.
In order to get around from place to place I have to do a lot of walking.
Seeing as Seattle is a city built on hills, walking is enough exercise for me.
In combination with walking
is Seattle’s bus system. The bus system is pretty good when trying to get to
neighboring cities, to downtown, and other nearby attractions. However, a car
is needed if I wanted to take a ferry to Vancouver Island or other attractions
nearer to the coast, and so on.
Within the past several weeks, I have been able to visit quite a number of places.
I have visited
Pike Place Market (famous for throwing fish), the Waterfront area where I took a ferry ride
to Bainbridge Island, Pioneer Square,
the Space Needle,
Gasworks Park for 4th of July fireworks, the Locks
where you can see boats passing from higher level lakes to lower level ocean
and salmon jumping, Gorge Amphitheatre (the view is amazing and the music is great),
and several nature parks including Greenlake and Mount Raineer (both the air/view from
here are amazing). I was also able to go canoeing and hiking among other things as well.
Although I was able to do and see a lot, there are still various other attractions
that Seattle offers, but those will have to wait until my next visit!
