August 6, 2001
This week, we are mainly working on three things:

1. Continue trying to remote access the JDBC driver from different UNIX box.
I spent the first couple days on it, but didn't get much luck. Finally I gave up and decided to start on something else instead of wasting time on the driver.

2. Trying to figure out the SQL so that when user types in the input, the system will use the SQL to give the output with CUI and Concept.

3. Writing a java program to use the SQL I mentioned above to retrive the data from UMLS2001 DBMS in the MySQL to return the output to user.
For an example, when a user inputs "bad breath" into the system, the java program will use the embedded SQL to find CUI(Concept Unique Identifier), the formal medical term "Halitosis", and the Semantic type "Sign or Symptom" back to the user.
