My Very First Week!
I got to Irvine, CA on Sunday, June 24. The girl I am subleasing my apartment from came to pick me up. Right after we left the airport I was amazed by the Irvine landscape. It is totally different from Dubuque, IA.

Monday morning, Alice Hagens (the girl who is also in DMP) and I met our mentor Wanda Pratt and some other graduate students. They all seemed very nice. Wanda gave us an introduction to her major research interests. To learn more about her research project, please go to her website.

The UCI campus is huge and beautiful and full of many different kinds of plants. As a plant fanatic, I am very excited. A couple of days I would take a book and go to the university park (which has even more plants) and sit and just enjoy the cool breeze, listen to the birds chirp, and watch the bunnies hop around me. Irvine also has a nice beach (if you like beaches and the ocean, you have to come to California).

The rest of the week I have been trying to learn UNIX since I have very little knowledge of UNIX. One of the graduate students loaned me a UNIX book. Alice knows a lot about UNIX, so she's been helping me, too. We also read a lot of documents about MySQL, trying to find documents that describe the best way to install the MySQL database so that we can access the data remotely.
