Fun fun fun: Mount St. Helens

A steaming volcano

Mount St. Helens is a volcano in southern Washington. It errupted in May 1980, and it is now a national volcanic monument. It is absolutely fascinating to see the total devastation caused by the erruption, and the natural recovery of the environment surrounding the mountain. It truly is beautiful and awe-inspring, and I definitely recommend you make time to visit it.

It was even more interesting to visit the volcano when we went (end of August 2005) because the volcano is very much still active; the growth of a new lava dome inside the crater (the thing that is steaming in the picture) continues as I write this (September 2005). You can check out the Mount St. Helens VolcanoCam to see what's happening with the volcano right now.
