The second week we visited Anne Arundel Medical Center in Anapolis several times as that is where the study will be taking place. We practiced running through the steps of setting up the equipment, and what we would say to the surgical trainer and trainees once they arrived. The first condition is when the trainer stands right next to the trainee and gives instruction verbally while using a virtual pointer to gesture on the screen (the traditional method). In the second condition the trainer and trainee are separated by a divider and the trainer monitors the surgery on two laptops - one showing the surgery, and the other showing the trainer's hands. Using E4 Empatica wristbands, we are measuring the EDA data of the trainer and trainee and also tracking their eye movements to get a sense of their cognitive load in both conditions as well as where they focus.
In order to get myself more familiar Dr. Kleinsmith's work and also to aid in formulating a research question, I read multiple papers on Dr. Kleinsmith's work, as well as papers on physiological synchrony, the use of physiological measures in understanding human-human interaction, and more.
