About the Experience
Joanna Finkelstein is an incoming junior at Pomona College and plans to graduate in May 2016. She is a Computer Science major with a minor in Psychology. This summer, she is participating in the Distributed Research Experiences for Undergraduates (DREU) program. Dr. Amy Hurst works in Human-Computer Interaction, part of the Information Systems Department at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). Dr. Hurst is Joanna's mentor for the program. Joanna is working with Dr. Hurst; Dr. Shaun Kane; and incoming Master's student, Caroline Galbraith in the Prototyping and Design lab (the "PAD"). The team is working on developing a device to help people with vision impairments navigate indoor buildings independently. The goal of the summer is to design and conduct low-fidelity evaluations of navigation aids for blind users. Read Joanna's final report and
