introduction

The Distributed Research Experience for Undergraduates is a program that matches women and minority computer science students with professors at different universities to give the students a summer research experience aimed to encourage the application for graduate school. I participated in the program last year at Oregon State University, and my experience and project can be read about here: Katie Wolf DREU 2009

This year I have been matched with Professor Elaine Chew at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles working within the MuCoaCo (Music Computation and Cognition) group where I will be working with aligning audio and midi files and studying expressive musical performance analysis on the Distributed Immersive Performance (DIP) Project .

My weekly log describes my week-by-week progress on the project as well as some of the social aspect of my time in California. This is mostly for other undergraduate students to read about my experience and get an idea of what reasearch is like from an undergraduate perspective. I also had the opportunity to present the preliminary findings of my work during a late braking/demo session at the 11th International Society for Music Information Retrieval Conference (ISMIR) held in Utrecht, Netherlands.
