I had a new experience this weekend. I went to a concert on Friday
night with a friend from Bucknell (yay Justin!) and some other people
he met through the research program he's doing at Emory. After the
concert, he and a friend of his (Dave) decided to walk me back to my
apartment. We took the MARTA to North Ave., not realizing at the time
that Midtown would have been closer. We left the station and walked
for awhile down North. I wasn't really recognizing anything yet, but
that wasn't surprising since I hadn't spent much time on the south end
of campus (I live on the north end). So we turned in the general
direction of campus down a well-lit street and kept going. A block or
so later, a guy approached us and asked if we were shopping. We gave
him sort of a funny look, and he explained..."you know, for the weed,
ecstasy, crystal meth..." We cut him off and told him that no, that
was not something we were interested in. He walked away, and called
back to us, "You better watch out, you're in the 'danger zone'." At
this point, we started to think we'd taken a wrong turn. We saw a
woman walking toward us and asked her where Georgia Tech was. She
gave us an incredulous look, and told us we were in the WRONG part of
the city. We started retracing our steps, and on the way we passed an
older man who commented, "Honor students," as he passed us. It would
be safe to say that our presence in this neighborhood turned some
heads as being a bit out of the ordinary. As it turned out we had
gone the wrong way on North Ave. when we left the station. We started
walking away from campus into the SE section of the city instead of
toward campus in the NW. We finally got back to my apartment an hour
and fifteen minutes after we had first left the MARTA station, and I
drove my friends home. Being from a small midwestern town, I had
never before been approached on the street and offered drugs. Not an
experience that I am likely to forget soon!
