Research Projects and Goals

The Education and Assistive Technology Laboratory at Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama is the location of my internship.

A major component of my internship will be to evaluate a website built by one of the graduate students. This project is the focal point of her senior defense. I will work with her to provide input on issues that visually impaired individuals might experience while trying to navigate the site and provide suggestions on how to make the site more accessible for such individuals. This will require becoming familiar with federal laws and web development standards currently in place.

Over the course of the next eight weeks, I will learn two object oriented software programs; Alice and Kodu. I will need to become proficient with both programs so that I am able to train K12 students that will be attending the summer computer camp. This camp is an outreach program for local and surrounding school children.

At the beginning as well as at the end of the camp a survey will be taken. I will be responsible for the compilation of this data. It should be compiled using Excel.

A teacher's workshop will be held to introduce teachers from schools around the state to Kodu. I will help with the logistics of the setup for the workshop and compile the data from surveys given to each of the participants before and after the event.

A final aspect of my project will be to evaluate Kodu for use with magnification software. This effort is being made to facilitate the children who wish to participate in the computer camp that may be visually impaired.
