Done with debugging (for now!)

On Monday morning, I finally finished debugging the victim cache configuration with the log. Phew! I was having a difficult time with it, but getting it to finally work was so nice. I definitely learned a lot about strategies to debug the simulator. After I finished debugging, I started running some more stats with the filter cache. The results that I was getting were still really strange. Cesare and I noticed that the filter cache still wasn't comparing addresses to cache tags properly. I also had a meeting with Cesare and Prof. Bahar, so I'll be giving a small presentation about what I've done so far at the meeting on Tuesday. I'm excited and a little nervous!

Fixing the Filter Cache

On Tuesday, I worked on fixing the filter cache. It required some minor changes in the code, and overall wasn't too bad. Then, I started to run a lot of simulations. The results that I'm getting with the filter cache are still really strange. The overall system cycles generated by the filter cache are higher than when the filter cache isn't used. This is strange because the filter cache should be causing less reads to memory, and hence less system cycles. Prof. Bahar suggested tracing through the code to see if the filter cache is triggering any extra reads. I'm hoping that I'll find something similar to that, and that fixing it won't be too bad.

Another DREU student!

On Thursday, Elba arrived! I'm excited to have another DREU student in the lab. Thursday was also the day of the picnic to celebrate Engineering become the School of Engineering at Brown. That afternoon we headed down to Colt State Park to eat burgers and play some bean bag toss. The weather was beautiful, and it was really fun!

I had worked some extra hours on Sunday, so Friday was a short day for me. I worked on some notes and graphs for my presentation at the meeting on Tuesday.

Weekend

Lake Winola!

This weekend, Kristin invited all of use down to her lake house on Lake Winola in Pennsylvania! We packed up on Friday afternoon and drove down. We made it to her house in time to go to her middle school and watch an amazing fireworks show!

On Saturday, we spent the majority of the day in or on the lake. It was so nice to sleep in and relax. We were able to go on a jet ski, as well! It was so much fun. (I've never been on one before, so I was a little nervous at first. Thanks, Julie, for letting me take the middle seat!) On Saturday night we enjoyed amazing food made by Kristin's mom, and a really fun Pontoon boat ride around half of the lake.

On Sunday (the 4th!) we got up early to kayak around half of the lake. Lake Winola has a rule where everyone in motorized boats has to go slow enough to not generate a wake before 11 am on Sunday mornings. The lake was beautiful to see by kayak. Kayaking was also definitely a good arm workout! We also went tubing, jet skiing, and played some more bean bag toss. On Sunday night, we went on a second Pontoon boat ride around the entire lake and watched some fireworks on the lake. It was definitely an amazing and relaxing weekend! (I'll try to post pictures soon.)
