Week 2
Dr. Dutta reviewed the paragraph I had written on the difference between classification and ranking, and explained that ranking is applying an ordering to a set. We went through the paper 'Learning to Rank Using Classification and Gradient Boosting,' discussing the parts that I had found difficult. Dr. Dutta explained the term "convex." She assigned the papers 'Learning to Order Things' and 'Learning to Rank: From Pairwise to Listwise Approaches' and to build a classifier in WEKA and run it on the Spambase data set.
I located the spambase data set and was able to download it, but although I found documentation of the .arff file format online, I had trouble applying it to the data set. I played around with WEKA a bit but was confused by the different GUIs available, though I did become more familiar with the tool and went through several of the tutorials online.
