Week 1 Report: June 19, 2009

My first weekly report is fairly mild. Much of this week has been spent getting acquianted with Lahar, which is the project I will be working on. You can read more about this in the Research section of my website. I met my mentor, Magda Balazinska, and my graduate student Julie.

Julie and I discussed possible projects and it looks like I will be focusing on audio processing. I will post more details and my proposal as that information becomes available. I have not done very much work with natural language or speech software, so this should be quite a learning experience. I admit I am a little bit intimidated, but hopefully I will have a solid start.

Starting Monday, I will have a lab mate! I work in the Databases lab, which is a common area for all members of the Databases group. There have already been a couple of practice talks scheduled here, but I am the only one who is currently using it as an office. I am rather excited to have somebody nearby for the rest of summer.
