Week 1: 6/2 - 6/10

I flew in on Saturday, hoping to find that the living arrangements I had made would be to my liking. In fact, they were not. Let it be known that one should not ever sublet 5168 Beeler St. Apt. 2 if one doesn't want to be exposed to the darker, lazier, slobbier side of humanity. Besides that, though, my housemates are all nice. There are two guys living upstairs, and another one will join us in July. They all attend CMU and are working for local companies. My other two housemates, April and Raye, are DMP interns at CMU, too. They're both working together in the Human-Computer Interaction Institute. I will be doing work in the Robotics Institute's Graphics Lab.

Most of my first week was spent doing administrative stuff--getting my ID, setting up computer accounts, etc. It feels rather slow. I'm glad I'm able to work on something I actually find interesting, though. I hope to do a lot this summer, both in and out of the lab. :)

For now, I'm just happy to be out of Mount Holyoke. Even during the summer, CMU's campus is quite lively. Squirrel Hill is very nice. Oh, and apparently Giant Eagle is the big grocery chain around here. At least that's a cooler name than 'Big Y.' I find that the cashiers are a little grumpy, though... Oh, and the bus to catch down to the Waterfront is 59U, which comes around sporadically at best. Still, there's lots to do at the Waterfront. On the Saturday I got here, I went to watch Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End with all but one of my housemates. Afterward, we went to Eat 'n' Park (the local equivalent of Denny's...?) for a very late dinner. I had Eggs Benedict for the first time! Anyway, I just wish the bathroom were cleaner... I also spent two entire days cleaning my room. Along with millions of dust bunnies, I found an empty carton of Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia ice cream by the bed and broken beads everywhere. There was also a big necklace on the desk. Did this guy go to a huge Mardi Gras party? In retaliation, I changed the network key to 'guysareslobs.' :D
