I spent some of last week focusing in on what exactly I want to be working on this summer. Even though I've been really enjoying my time here, I've also been feeling a little scattered. Working on improvements to the interface is cool, but I haven't really had A Project. That's changed a bit; I mentioned last week that we were considering implementing private comments. (It was pointed out that "comments" is probably not such an accurate word; the problem is that "notes" is sort of taken by the bloggers. Must consider.) I started working on that, using James' tagging code as a base for the commenting code. It's been a little problematic, though. I copied most of the tagging code pretty much verbatim, but it's refusing to work properly. Hopefully I'll get a chance to get help with that today from Mark, another undergrad on the UP team, although I'm not sure if he knows much more about the DOM stuff than I do. It's really frustrating when things don't work, and you can't figure out why.

I'm also working on a couple of surveys for a CS class being taught second Summer Session. The teacher is a grad student in the department, and she's using UP, so we're taking the opportunity to test tagging. The class started yesterday; we'll probably be surveying next Monday, and then again at the end of the class. There's a conference deadline right before the final, which is a little frustrating because we won't be able to get all the information in if we want to write a paper for it, but oh well.

Finally, I had a quiet weekend. I was so totally looking forward to it. I just hung around the apartment on Saturday, then cleaned on Sunday until Liz's birthday party, which consisted of four of us watching the BBC miniseries of Pride & Prejudice until dinner, at which point some more people showed up. Also I made a cake from a box. It came out better than the carrot cupcakes from scratch that I attempted a week or two ago, which is to say that it neither collapsed nor overflowed the pan. Duncan Hines Spice Cake mix. I highly recommend it.
