Ella Wellman

Hello!  I am Ella Wellman and this summer I am a participant in the DMP and Computer Science REU programs at Texas A&M.  I am a senior in Computer Science at the University of Wyoming, so venturing down into this hot humid climate has been an adventure.  I will be graduating in May 2006 and hope to attend graduate school the following academic year.

So far I am really enjoying myself at Texas A&M.  I wanted to come down to Texas this summer to experience a larger school with a wonderful research environment.  I wanted to be able to participate in projects that are not available for undergrad research at my own university.  I also really enjoy the academic environment and being able to be in close contact with professors, graduate students, and other undergraduates.

At the University of Wyoming I have had excellent research experiences.  Last semester I was granted funding for a Hazard Detection Robot, through the NSF EPSCoR project.  I developed the software to be implemented in the Lego RCX and constructed a robot to detect hazardous materials or conditions.  In Fall 2004 I was a part of an independent study project that implemented linear particle formations within a Java coded artificial physics environment.  I tested how the environment settings interacted with the linear formations and completed a report to be used at the Robotics Lab to further research being done on robots moving in such a linear formation.  In 2003 I participated in another independent study project creating a web based database administration tool for faculty/student advising, used to update faculty and student information.

I am also involved in many extra curricular activities at the University of Wyoming.  This next year I will be an active member in Mortar Board, Presidents Senior Class Ambassadors, Minority Student Leadership Initiative (MSLI) as a mentor, Gamma Omicron Chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma as President, and the SIS Steering Committee as the student representative which provides direction from timeline, budget, scope and resource perspectives to the 100+ University employees working on the project to replace the Student Information System and implement a university portal.

I am also excited for next semester because my sister Mary will be joining me at the University of Wyoming as a Freshman, which leaves my Dad, Bob, my Mom, Polly, and my brother, Jay, alone at home with our really fat cat Otis and our dog Curby.
