Week 5: August 1 - 7

Work

This week we had a very informative meeting with John Gennari and a graduate student called Alan Au. They have a lot of experience working with Protégé, so they helped us with figuring out how to implement some concepts in our knowledge base (we also learned that the most correct term for what we're dealing with is a "knowledge base", not a "database" :)) With their help, we'll hopefully have a good version of the knowledge base to test our application on.

We also got a good part of the "finding differences" algorithm done, though there is still a big part that needs to be done. We need some feedback from Raven for that one, so we're waiting to hear from her.

We also worked on the interface for our application, and especially the "results" section. We have to figure out a good way to represent our results, which are the differences or similiarities between two structures in two different species. I am learning a lot about making GUIs in Java, fun stuff.

Fremont graffiti

My brother came to visit this weekend, so I took him around town. We went to the waterfront, and took a one-hour harbor cruise, it was fun. We also walked around Fremont and Capitol Hill, and visited the sites: In Fremont (which, as everyone knows, is the center of the universe) we saw the Lenin Statue, the Fremont rocket, Rapunzel and the troll.. In Capitol Hill, we did some street ballroom dancing on Broadway, and also visited Volunteer Park and the Volunteer Park Conservatory, which was full of cool flowers and cactii. Great weekend, again. It's been fantastic weather here the past few weeks, let's hope it stays that way!
