Week 4: July 25 - 31

Work

This week we ran into some problems with the design of our application. We had to revise our initial algorithm for finding the differences between 2 structures in 2 different species. I think we sorted some of the difficulties out over (many many) emails, and when Tejinder and I met briefly with Dr. Shapiro and Kasia on Friday. We should have enough to work on next week, I think.

I also spent some time this week learning about the Java Web Start architecture. It's a useful tool for making your Java applications or applets accessible online without the client having to download and compile any source code. I think I got it to work with our Java applet, we'll see whether we'll need it later on, but right now it's useful because Raven (who is in Philadelphia) can have easy access to our work.

We also spent a fair amount of time this week learning about Protégé and how to work with the editor. There is a lot of data to enter in the database, and we aren't sure how to do some of it. It's not very exciting work, but it's got to be done, I guess.

I made a little progress with the GUI for our application, and also wrote a few more methods for difference finding.

It seems like there is going to be a lot of work for us to do over the next 5-6 weeks, I hope that if we do as much as possible, we'll have a useful, working version of the application.

Swimming in the Santiam River in Oregon

This weekend I went back to Corvallis, OR to visit friends. It was a great weekend, we went swimming in the Santiam River on Sunday, and I showed Tejinder around OSU and the great metropolis of Corvallis :)
