Megan Thurber

Background

I have lived in New Jersey since I was very young. I am very close with my immediate family as well as my extended family. I am the second of four children; I have an older brother and two younger sisters. Of course I miss them all while I am out here in Colorado. Another thing I miss very much is the beach. I love making day trips to the beach especially in the summer.

Academics

I went to a small high school, Gateway Regional, in Gloucester County, New Jersey. I graduated from there in June 2001 in the top ten percent of my class. Now I attend The College of New Jersey and plan to graduate in May 2005. That means my last year there is fastly approaching. When I graduate my degree will be a bachelors of Science in Computer Science Major along with a minor in Mathematics and Classical Studies. I hope to attend graduate school that fall after I graduate. At this time I am looking into master programs in the Philadelphia Area.

Interests

Best Buddies logo - two figures hugging At school I do not have a lot of spare time due to the activies I get involved with. The past three years I have been a member of Best Buddies as well as the Treasurer of my college's chapter. This is an international organization where volenteers are paired up with a local buddy. The buddies are mentally or physically challenged and usually live in group homes. As one of the volenteers I would take my buddy out to do things he loved. We also hold many activies on campus for the buddies to come participate in. They love the ice cream socials we throw, and we always have a blast at their dance parties! Many people say that this is such a great way to help the community, but what they don't realize is how much fun we have with our buddies.

In high school I stopped playing to focus on my AP course, but I have started to play again at college for a co-ed intramural team. The team consist of some very talented players as well as players who had never kicked a soccer ball before. This past spring we went to the play offs, but we were out in the first round. We had a lot of fun, and I hope that all the people who did not graduate will come out for the team again next year.

Upsilon Pi Epsilon Logo Computer Science is also an obvious interest of mine. This year I was inducted into Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the Honors Society for Computer Science. I was elected President for next year. I know that task will keep me very busy during my senior year. I am hoping to create a much more active Computer Science community at my school.
