I learned about the Distributed Mentor Program of the Computing Research Association Committee on the Status of Women in Computing Research through a friend and former participant, Emily Gibson. I had already worked with Emily on year long research project funded through another branch of the CRA-W, the Collaborative Research Experience for Women project, and was encouraged to apply for the Distributed Mentor Program. The Distributed Mentor Program matches undergraduate women in Computer Science and Computer Engineering with female mentors in the field in an effort to increase the number of women entering graduate school. The program funds both the students and the mentors for a 10 week period of research which is performed at the mentor's institution. I was matched with Dr. Margrit Betke of Boston University for the Summer of 2003.
