  • HI!

I'm Emily Tennant. Welcome to my web page for summer 2002. This summer I am doing research in computer science at Duke University (a big enough place for a small-town girl) through the Distributed Mentor Project (DMP) of the Computing Resarch Association. This is a project aimed at encouraging more women in computer science and engineering to attend graduate school by matching female undergraduate students with female mentors at institutions with graduate research programs (like Duke!). You can check out the links at left for more information about the DMP or CRA-W. My mentor for the summer was Carla Ellis. If you check out her web page at right, you can find out more info about everything she's doing (you might even discover that she is going to heading up the Committee on the Status of Women in Computer Research next year).

This web page is devoted to my experiences this summer, a.k.a. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly at Duke. You can find out more info about me, the project I worked on, and how I felt as the weeks progressed. Of course, there's also the required selection of Duke anecdotes and must-sees. But best of all, you can find out what it's really like to move in on an unknown campus while existing in that nebulous twilight zone somewhere between student and staff.

    Have fun browsing!
